“Be the change that you wish to see in the world” --Mahatma Gandhi
What do The Lorax by Dr. Seuss, The Weintraub Israel Center, and our THA Kindergarten class all have in common? THA.
For three years, THA kindergarten students have participated in a yearlong program with the Weintraub Israel Center called Partnership2gether. This program collaborates the ever-inquisitive THA Kindergarten students with an Israeli Kindergarten class to complete a series of meaningful projects. The focus of this year's projects highlighted sustainability and how they can play a substantial part in taking care of the earth or healing the world. Students were immersed in artistic experiences through books such as Dr. Seuss’s The Lorax and completed crafts out of recycled menorahs from the Hanukkah season which contextualized how each student has a vested interest in keeping the earth clean.
Kindergarten teacher Danielle Shahrian explained the program as an opportunity for meaningful collaboration and gives the students the chance to look at conservation on a global scale. She contextualizes the program with the quote from Mahatma Gandhi, "Be the change that you wish to see in the world." The conclusion of their project was a community clean-up, removing litter and trash from around our schools' campus and the neighboring JCC. It was a beautiful ending to their first year at THA.
